Stephen T. Hearst is vice president and general manager of Hearst’s Western Properties. He is responsible for managing Hearst’s extensive ranching, timber and property operations—primarily located in California. Properties include the historic 82,000-acre ranch that surrounds Hearst Castle, the 71,000-acre Jack Ranch in Paso Robles, 61,000 acres of timberlands in Northern California and Hearst's commercial real estate interests in San Francisco and Southern California.
From the Hearst Ranch web page: "At the Hearst Ranches it’s always been our practice to treat the animals with great care. Our cattle live a completely natural existence as foragers and grazers. Grazing enhances a complex and balanced mosaic of native grasslands, which in turn maintains the vigor and distribution of these habitats, ensuring a sustainable food system. Well-managed grazing is one of the primary reasons for the excellent condition of the coastal prairie and native grasslands along the inland terraces. It keeps cattle on the range, fertilizes the land naturally, sustains a seasonal rhythm to the ranches and produces a remarkable meat whose flavor is the authentic taste of the American West. The historic working landscape at Hearst Ranch will be preserved forever thanks to one of the largest land conservation easements in California history, a joint effort with the California Rangeland Trust, the American Land Conservancy and the State of California."
For this episode, Archie McLaren, founder of the Central Coast Wine Classic, joins us for an edifying discussion with Jim Saunders, winemaker for the Hearst Ranch Winery. The winery produces a wide variety of wines from the central coast region.
From the web page: "The hand-crafted offerings of Hearst Ranch Winery have been brought to life by the collaboration of sound agricultural practices, impeccable winemaking and the philanthropic involvement of Steve Hearst and Jim Saunders. The fruit from California’s Central Coast vineyards is among the finest in the world. Blend in the talent of our winemaker and you get Hearst Ranch Wines, exhibiting the excellence that is a testimony to the “Legacy of Quality™”—synonymous with the Hearst tradition."
