SBMM Maritime Tastings
Where: Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara, California
What: Enjoy presentations by Fishermen and Scientists, as well as tastings by local Chefs.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will be hosting a series of fresh seafood presentations and cooking demonstrations, on Oct. 4, 11, and 25th. Local fishermen and seafood producers will give a short presentation on how they harvest fresh seafood, followed by a presentation by scientists/experts on local seafood, and a demonstration by local chefs on how to prepare each item.
Black Cod will be featured on October 4th: Local fisherman, Tony Vultaggio, will discuss his experiences fishing for black cod; Merit McCrea, Research Assistant from the Marine Science Institute Love Lab, will discuss the sustainability and biology of black cod; and Chef Budi Kazali of the Ballard Inn and Restaurant will prepare tastings of a black cod dish, complete with cooking demonstration.
Abalone will be featured on October 11th: Abalone farmer, Doug Bush will discuss abalone harvesting; Author and diver, Scrap Lundy will discuss the history of the abalone diving industry; and Chef Michael Hutchings of Michael’s Catering in Santa Barbara will prepare tastings of an abalone dish, complete with cooking demonstration.
Lobster will be featured on October 25th: Commercial fisherman, Steve Escobar, will discuss his experiences fishing for lobster; Assistant Researcher at the Earth Science Institute, Matt Kay, will discuss the sustainability and biology of lobster; and Chef James Sly of Sly’s Restaurant in Carpinteria will prepare tastings of a lobster dish, complete with cooking demonstration.
Each presentation will also feature tastings from local wineries and businesses including d’Angelos Bakery and Olivos del Mar. Guest appearances will be made by the Ty Warner Sea Center and Community Seafood to discuss sustainable seafood events and efforts. Tickets are $20 for Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and American Institute of Wine and Food members, and $30 for nonmembers. This series is being held in collaboration with the American Institute of Wine and Seafood and the Ty Warner Sea Center, and these events are part of Santa Barbara’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau’s Epicure promotion. On October 18th the Ty Warner Sea Center will hold their annual Sensational Seafood Event on Sterns Wharf (not included in the Maritime Museum series).
About the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum
The 7,825 square-foot Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, located at the Santa Barbara Harbor, opened to the public in July 2000. Today, the museum is a vital part of the community, offering educational programs, interactive displays, and both temporary and permanent exhibits, attracting thousands of visitors each year. To date, more than 62,500 schoolchildren from 140 area schools have participated in the Maritime Museum’s educational programs.
Museum & Store Dates and Hours: Open Daily 10am-6pm, Closed Wednesdays.
Museum Admission Information: $7 for Adults; $4 for seniors, students, and youth; $2 for children aged 1-5. The Museum is free the 3rd Thursday of every month.
